    Where to Plant Garlic

    • You should garlic the plant in full sun.
    • Plant garlic in humus-rich, loose soil that is well-drained.
    • When the ground area freezes in winter, plant in a mounded or raised bed.
    • Garlic requires a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

    1. Garlic Planting Time

    • During the first two months of garlic growth, garlic requires cool air at 32° to 50°F (0-10°C) temperature when roots are established. As it matures, garlic is affect by hot weather.
    • While the soil is still cool, plant the garlic in spring. Before the soil has thawed or last spring frost and is workable, that time, you should plant the garlic 4 to 6 weeks before.
    • At the end of the season of growth, plant in the spring, then harvests approximately 120-150 days after planting.
    • Plant the garlic in autumn or late summer as the soil gradually cools.
    • Before the first freeze, plant the garlic for about 6 weeks. Then, autumn planting will come to harvest about the middle of the following summer.

    2. Planting and Spacing Garlic

    • Grow garlic from bulbils and cloves. Place the clove in the ground area with the lower side (the root) and the pointed side.
    • Plant cloves 1 to 2 inches (2.5-10cm) deep and 6 to 8 inches (15-20cm) apart.
    • Space rows 12 inches (30 cm) apart.
    • Add a 5-10-10 fertilizer or a tablespoon of bone meal or fish meal to the bottom of the hole at planting time. Sprinkle some soil over the fertilizer before planting the cloves.
    • Plant only firm, healthy-looking cloves or bulbs that are pest and disease-free.
    • Carefully separate the cloves (do not remove the skins) to avoid scratching and to keep the skins intact. Plant the largest clove; Use small cloves for cooking.
    • Plant garlic acquired from seed catalogues, a garden centre, or one you have grown yourself. Garlic from a grocery store can be treated with a growth inhibitor.
    • If you’re using bulbs harvested from your garden the season before, plant thicker outer cloves; Use small centre cloves for cooking. (The average garlic bulb weighs 2 to 3 ounces and produces 6 to 8 plantable cloves.)
    • Plant 12 to 16 plants per person.
    • Cloves planted in autumn will first establish their root system before they freeze. Shoots and roots will resume growth in early autumn.

    3. Watering Garlic

After planting the garlic, keep the soil moist but not wet. Roots will resume growth in spring if the soil freezes in winter and resume watering in spring as well. During maturity, reduce the water as bulbs. Before harvest, allow the soil to go just dry soil for 3 to 4 weeks. This will improve the flavour of garlic.

    4. Feeding Garlic

    • Add commercial organic planting or well-aged compost mix to planting beds twice a year.
    • Mist-spray garlic leaves with fish emulsion or keep extract every two weeks. Side plants with a light application of blood meal.
    • As the days lengthen, begin feeding the ground-covered garlic in the spring.
    • Heavy use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers will reduce the taste of garlic tubers. Use a 5-10-10 formula if you apply fertilizer.

    • Pinch away blooms if you are growing hard-necked garlic to focus the plant’s efforts on bulb formation rather than foliage. Flowers will appear in early summer. (The flower stalks can be added to the stir-fry)
    • Heavy planting beds with straw or hay before first hardening if the garlic remains in the ground over winter.
    • Avoid planting garlic where garlic or onions have recently grown.
