In the last few years, the most debatable topic on the table of the laureates is “Climate Change.” There is a large section of society even now that disapproves of climate change theories. For them, it is just like a ghost that doesn’t exist in reality. The good news is that these prejudices are changing with the new scientific theories and awareness among the people by environmentalists. Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmentalist at the age of just 15, challenged world leaders to take immediate action for climate change mitigation. We need more examples like her in the world to make people aware of climate change.
What Exactly is Climate Change?
In layman’s terms, it is just unusual weather on Earth. In the last 100 years, Earth’s temperature has risen by one degree. This number might not be significant, according to you. But in terms of the Earth’s temperature, this number is significant enough to cause catastrophe in the environment. The main reason behind this global warming is greenhouse gasses (Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide, etc.) which get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere.
If you want to read more about climate change, there are various books available online. Black Friday in July 2022 is also on the way where you can purchase any book at a discounted price. Impacts of Climate Change
These days you might see heatwave news in the media. If we talk about India, it has been in the grip of what seems like an eternity of heat waves. This year we witnessed the highest temperature in April if we compare it to the last 122 years. According to a report by the IPCC, Heat extremes have increased while cold extremes have decreased. Sea Level has been rising continuously throughout the 21st century resulting in coastal erosion and severe flooding in low-lying areas. The addition of half a degree centigrade
The Earth’s temperature will increase in hot extremes, extreme precipitation, and drought conditions. Glaciers and mountains are melting, including our Himalayas, which can cause significant catastrophes in the environment.
Sustainable Approach to saving the Planet
The best method we should adopt to mitigate climate change and save our planet is the “Sustainable Approach.” For years, we adopted the Linear Economic concept of taking – making – waste. It is also one of the leading causes of Climate change worldwide. A lot of efforts were made to tackle this by focussing on the transition to renewable energy sources. By transitioning to renewables, we can solve only half of the problem. The circular economy can assist us in tackling the other half. A circular economy is an economic perspective to eliminate waste from the environment with the continual use of resources. By eliminating waste and pollution, we can reduce emissions linked with the production of the materials that go to waste.
By keeping materials and products in use, we preserve the incorporated energy in products and materials rather than producing new materials, which can create greenhouse gasses. This will help in reviving our natural system. By regenerating natural systems, we store and retain carbon in the mother earth, which also helps build soil health. With the help of the circular economy approach, we can build an economy that’s fit for a prosperous climate. We need to act now on the issue of climate change; otherwise, we will miss the bus. The environment is something we are trustees of. It is our moral duty to leave behind a better environment for our children and great-grandchildren.
