Embryology refers to the branch of study in biology that deals with the study of an embryo and its development. Embryologists help women who cannot give birth to a baby naturally. They work with a fertility specialist and track the growth of the embryo. The Institute of reproductive medicine provides the course of embryology in which it is not necessary to qualify for the NEET exam.

A student who goes for this study needs to understand others’ emotional feelings and must have empathy towards their patients. In this way, there develops a nice bond between the patient and the doctor. It gets the patient to build trust in the doctor. Women at the time of their pregnancy when trying to conceive, need emotional support from their husbands. As well as the doctor as it gives inner strength to be in the whole procedure very comfortably. It not only gives them strength but also acts as a stress relief for the patient.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Embryologist

Embryologists also have responsibilities, unlike other doctors. They generally deal with the egg retrieval procedure such as in the In-vitro fertilization of a patient. They interact with the patient and build trust so that they can easily speak up about the problems faced by they. And it gets easy for the Embryologists to discuss the procedure and the treatments related to it. An Embryologist needs to be time specific because everything done in the process needs to be done on time to get the result.

Firstly, they collect eggs and then the samples of sperm are tested, and then they are frozen so that when it is necessary, they will be brought into use.  Everything is done in a very well-mannered way and in a stipulated time frame as a bit of negligence can be dangerous to everybody, and so they make sure that the patients are regular with the prescribed medicines. Then they also check the paperwork, if done properly as they require proof to start any procedure.

Qualification Required for Becoming an Embryologist

It is necessary to have a bachelor’s degree in biology and the student must have done post-graduation in reproductive technology, biotechnology, embryology, etc. All these studies give a student theological as well as practical knowledge. A training program is also required and is beneficial too.

    Certain Skills Which Are Required

    • A student must be an active listener first, and they must know how to interact with their patients not only verbally but also in eye contact while talking.
    • A student must be empathetic toward their patients to understand the problem and situation of the patient. It gets easy for them to build trust.
    • A student must be very attentive while attending to their patients to know every little detail and then prescribe any medicine or treatment.
    • This field requires a lot of patience as sometimes the procedure of reproduction may fail and this brings emotional breakdown to the family. Again, restarting afresh is what you need to do instead of losing hope.
    • There come to a lot of ups and downs and people or the patient generally lose their temper but as an Embryologist, you need to be very calm and understand their loss too.
    • They need to be flexible and must adapt to the changes in their routine. An Embryologist must know that there could be an emergency at any time, and they need to be there with the patient when they are in need.

    Conclusion

Opting for an Embryologist as a career is a good choice. It brings you a lot of challenges to deal with. Requires the dealing capacity to work in labs as well as in practicality with the patients emotionally, physically, and mentally. It is an enjoyable career path to choose and is rewarding too. Fellowship in reproductive medicine helps and guides students in deciding on their field. Nowadays, most women are going through this phase of infertility. So more Embryologists will be in need soon. So there is no harm in opting for embryologists as your career option as they are paid well for their hard work.
